SMA therapy in Poland – Spinraza

In Poland, Spinraza is administered free of charge under the public healthcare. Treatment with this drug is available in 35 hospitals across Poland. The drug can be offered to anyone with SMA as long as their spine condition allows it.

To start Spinraza treatment in Poland, follow the steps below.

  1. Identify the hospital. Use the list below to check which hospital is the most convenient for you in terms of travel. Contact the appropriate clinic or hospital department by phone or e-mail and ask about the possibility of inclusion in the SMA treatment programme, including waiting times. Communicate in Polish or English if possible. If you learn that the waiting time is long (in excess of 2–3 months), you may like to reach out to other hospitals. Waiting times for treatment start can be long in some hospitals, especially for adult patients.
  2. Obtain a confirmation of treatment. If the hospital has the capacity to treat you, an appointment date will be scheduled. Enquire how long you will need to stay in the hospital and how many people are allowed with the patient. Find out what documents you need to email or bring to the hospital. To qualify for the Spinraza programme, you must have results of a genetic test that also includes the number of copies of the SMN2 gene. Check your medical records whether they contain information about the number of the SMN2 gene copies. If they do not, the doctor will order a new genetic test during the initial hospital appointment; you can also order the test privately and later bring the results to the hospital.
  3. Arrange a GP referral. Before you go to hospital, get a referral from a GP, i.e. a pediatrician or an internist in a primary care center (clinic). Find out where the nearest clinic is located, make an appointment, and ask the doctor to refer you to a neurology (or paediatric neurology) unit for SMA therapy. This is a very important step – hospital departments in Poland do not accept patients without a referral from a general practitioner. Only a referral from a clinician who sees patients on state-funded healthcare is allowed, i.e. it cannot be through a private visit.
  4. Attend the hospital appointment. Bring your identity documents and medical documentation for the appointment, if possible translated into Polish. At the visit, tell the doctor about any health problems. Arrive on time – if you are running late, call the hospital immediately so that the doctors can reschedule the visit and allocate the freed appointment slot to another patient. Your child will be unlikely to receive the treatment at this visit; this will be a screening appointment. Your doctor may suggest you stay overnight or for more days for further medical testing.
  5. Prepare to begin treatment. For children with SMA type 1, doctors will schedule the drug to be administered in a few days’ time. For children with SMA type 2 or 3, treatment is approved by a medical team that meets monthly; consequently, waiting times will be longer. The approval is almost automatic – you do not have to worry that your child will be refused treatment as long as their spine is straight enough for a lumbar puncture to be possible. After the approval, you will receive information on when to come to the hospital for treatment.
  6. Receive the drug. Arrive at the hospital on time. Some hospitals give Spinraza on an outpatient basis, i.e. the patient can return home on same day. Other hospitals prefer the patient to stay for at least one night. Before administering the drug, a physiotherapy examination is usually performed to monitor the effectiveness of the therapy.

In case of problems with the organization of treatment, do not hesitate to contact us and we will try to help.

Language barrier

Medical documentation from Ukraine, including the results of genetic tests, is acceptable if it is in Polish or English; otherwise, it should be translated into Polish.

Hospitals in Poland do not have interpreters during patient visits. The SMA Foundation plans to finance interpreting services for hospitals, but as of today, we suggest that you go to medical appointments with a person who speaks Polish well.
